CYBER THREATCAST
CYBER THREAT INTELLIGENCE BRIEFING
CISA added five vulnerabilities exploited by Flax Typhoon to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog and ordered federal agencies to remediate them by October 11, 2026. The China-linked campaign targeted roughly 20 Taiwanese universities and probed critical infrastructure, while separate attacks compromised more than 500 GitHub accounts and planted credential-stealing workflows across tens of thousands of repositories.
Flax Typhoon targeted poorly monitored edge devices, combining vulnerability exploitation and password spraying to establish persistence and steal credentials and email. The five listed flaws—CVE-2015-3306, CVE-2015-5477, CVE-2016-3081, CVE-2021-3199 and CVE-2023-22894—affect products including Apache Struts, ISC BIND, Jenkins, Juniper ScreenOS and ONLYOFFICE Docs. Authorities also seized seven domains associated with Integrity Technology Group tools.
GitHub Actions and npm have become active credential-collection and malware-delivery channels: malicious workflows harvested development and cloud secrets, while eight MALFEX packages recorded 40,767 downloads and delivered RAT and credential-stealing payloads. Beyond software pipelines, approximately 125 cryptocurrency hacks affected more than $1.17 billion in Q3, and major disclosures exposed millions of records in Japan, Denmark and South Korea.
Editorial: Recommended Actions
01
PRIORITY
Remediate CVE-2015-3306, CVE-2015-5477, CVE-2016-3081, CVE-2021-3199, and CVE-2023-22894 now, prioritizing exposed edge devices and systems supporting critical infrastructure or operational technology. Flax Typhoon has exploited these flaws alongside password spraying to establish persistence and steal credentials and email. Review Active Directory, Microsoft 365, Exchange, Apache Struts, ISC BIND, Jenkins, Juniper ScreenOS, and ONLYOFFICE environments for unexpected access and persistence rather than waiting for the federal October 11, 2026 deadline.
02
PRIORITY
Patch internet-facing Zimbra Collaboration Suite servers for CVE-2024-45519 immediately and inspect exposed installations for backdoors, web shells, and other unauthorized payloads. The postjournal command-injection flaw allows unauthenticated remote code execution, attackers are exploiting it, official fixes are available, and CISA has added it to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog.
03
PRIORITY
Install SonicWall’s SMA1000 hotfix immediately or remove the management interface from public access until the update is applied. Review appliance logs and initiate incident response where exploitation indicators appear. Honeypots have observed attempts against the critical Appliance Work Place SSRF flaw, which may allow unauthenticated attackers to reach internal appliance functions on SMA1000 6210, 7210, and 8200v systems.
04
PRIORITY
Apply PaperCut’s latest fixes—not merely earlier patches—and investigate systems using the supplied log indicators. CVE-2026-82077, CVE-2026-82078, and CVE-2026-81578 form a pre-authentication remote-code-execution chain that includes bypasses of prior patches; PaperCut disclosed active exploitation, and watchTowr honeypots independently captured attacks. Use PaperCut’s temporary mitigations only while completing the update and investigation.
05
PRIORITY
Audit GitHub repositories and developer environments for malicious Actions workflows, affected npm packages, and exposed credentials. Search for .github/workflows/security-audit.yml and connections to 193.32.204[.]199, then rotate GitHub, cloud, SaaS, source-control, and AI-service secrets available to affected pipelines. Remove Tensorlake npm 0.5.144 and replace it with 0.5.145; investigate hosts that installed it for stolen tokens, cloud credentials, SSH keys, Kubernetes or Vault secrets, browser data, wallets, and AI-tool configurations. Windows teams should also identify installations of the eight MALFEX packages, which delivered Overlord RAT, movinlike, or a disguised executable.
