Halil, the exposure unit is a reachable Brotli decoder, not a host package. Researchers demonstrated RCE against the official Node.js 24.22.0 Linux arm64 image using malicious Brotli data; cited paths include built-in fetch(), compressed Express request bodies, and explicit decoder calls. Microsoft’s fixes cover current .NET releases and affected Visual Studio and PowerShell builds, while the vulnerable component also appears across other projects. Inventory should therefore follow the call path: untrusted Content-Encoding: br input → decoder implementation → deployed artifact → effective workload identity. An SBOM hit without reachability is lower priority; a decoder hidden in a transitive dependency, bundled Node binary, self-contained .NET deployment, frozen application, or OCI layer remains exposed even after the host runtime is patched. For containers, rebuild from fixed runtimes and redeploy every pod, job, and rollback image—patching the node underneath does not establish that the image changed. Apply the same rule to serverless custom images, deployment packages, and shared layers. For provider-managed Lambda, Azure Functions, Cloud Functions, proxies, or service meshes, do not infer exposure merely from “Brotli supported”: require confirmation that attacker-controlled data reaches the affected decoder. Shared responsibility is precise here: the CSP owns its managed runtime update; the customer still owns packaged libraries, custom containers, event paths, and the execution role. If exploitation succeeds, scope impact by that role’s effective permissions—secrets access, object stores, Kubernetes API rights, cross-account trust, and network reach—not by the CVE score.
Minimum action tonight: identify internet- or tenant-reachable Brotli decoding paths; upgrade, rebuild, and redeploy their actual artifacts. Where that cannot happen tonight, reject Brotli-compressed request bodies and disable or isolate automatic Brotli decoding of untrusted responses. Quarantine vulnerable images and build outputs so an autoscaler or rollback cannot resurrect them. “Serverless” still has a vulnerable runtime somewhere; it merely makes the patch ticket harder to assign.
Escalate from remediation to incident response when telemetry closes the chain: a suspicious Brotli payload reached a vulnerable decoder and was followed by SIGSEGV/core dumps, unexplained process or container restarts, child-process or shell execution, anomalous file writes or egress, metadata-service access, Kubernetes API use, secrets retrieval, or cloud control-plane activity by the workload identity—especially AssumeRole or equivalent token exchange. Preserve request bodies, crash dumps, image digests, runtime versions, pod/serverless invocation logs, and cloud audit logs. A blocked payload against a fixed decoder is remediation telemetry; payload delivery plus memory corruption or subsequent identity activity is an incident. No source in the available evidence provides a universal exploit signature or confirms every CSP-managed runtime, so absence of one known IOC is not exculpatory.
